I cannot say for sure if they washed or buried the dead, but they certainly had direct physical contact with the sick and dead. I was a military medic, deployed to 6 African countries on medical humanitarian missions. In the best of situations, "precautions" are a mask, gloves, and a gown. The sick are not housed in an isolation room. They are crammed together in fly infested tents, on cots with holes cut out so that feces and other body fluids can fall into a bowl on the floor. Under these conditions, it isn't hard to imagine how accidental exposure can occur. I agree that sending our own troops in puts them at increased risk. But no one in the world, apart from US military has the ability to rapidly deploy state of the art field hospitals and infectious disease experts. We did it in 1994 with the cholera epidemic in Rwanda..in the middle of an active volcano eruption, and a Hutu-Tutsi massacre.
