You do have to remember that they get all the taxes back, plus if they claim the earned income credit an extra 1800.00-3000.00 more than they paid in, not that it makes any easier to live on but at minimum wage they pay no tax and in fact get a pay check from the taxes that others pay. It's more like an enforced savings plan until Jan 31st and then all bets are off. I do agree though I wonder how anybody can live off minimum wage, with the way costs are rising. Especially energy costs, a gallon of gas or a KW of electricity costs the same if you make 175k or 18k a year.
