I remember one telethon many years ago, where he completely wigged out and flipped his lid on camera live. It sent every crew member straight into panic mode and they damn near drug him off the stage.
He went off the deep end when he called for a total pledge count and got pissed off yelling and swearing over the amount of money pledged not being high enough. They apologized to the viewers explaining it was due to his passion for the cause combined with exhaustion.
