Many years ago, in downtown St. Louis, there was an authentic Jewish / New York Style deli called Dunie's. It was near the bus station, one street north of Washington Avenue across the street from the Globe-Democrat and Post Dispatch. (I can't for the life of me remember the street, Delmar?)

OMG, the smells that radiated from this place where unreal.

It was nothing fancy, but neat as a pin, and the staff had been there for years. (I believe they opened in 1910 or there about.)

On each table was a covered bowl, with a set of small tongs, full of homemade, room temperature kosher dill pickles. They were fabulous.

Behind the counter, white aproned and hatted old gentleman would carve to order roasted turkey, hot pastrami, roasted beef, hot ham and other goodies from huge pieces of meat that were suspended on chains. They served up a pastrami sandwich on deli rye so lean and juicy it could make a grown man cry! And their fresh carved open face turkey sandwiches, OMG.

Dunie's is now long gone, bought and demolished when they put in the original convention center in the early 90's.

If you are talking an authentic delicatessen like this...my, oh my...I would be there several times a week!
