Concealed weapons, medical marijuana voted down in Illinois House Bills came from both ends of the political spectrum May 05, 2011|By Monique Garcia and Todd Wilson, Tribune reporters
The Illinois House defeated attempts Thursday to let people carry concealed weapons and use marijuana for medical purposes following lengthy, contentious and emotional debates over how to make some folks feel safer and some feel better.
The two high-profile votes represented an unusual convergence of major measures arising from opposite ends of the political spectrum but suffering the same outcome. The gun bill failed by six votes, and the marijuana proposal failed by seven.
The concealed weapons debate unfolded only hours after Gov. Pat Quinn renewed his call to defeat the legislation following remarks on the Capitol lawn. The governor, who spoke at a ceremony honoring fallen police officers, called the timing of the vote on concealed carry "ironic."
