More of Maryville Road is getting smoothed out.
Granite City recently received an Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity grant to improve the busy street between Clark Avenue/Buenger Boulevard and Clinton Drive.
Previously, the city could only afford to resurface the road between Clark/Buenger and St. Clair Avenue. (Work on that phase is expected to start May 9.)
The new portion will cost about $400,000. Construction on the additional phase is expected to start this summer and finish in the fall.
Carla Wright, 68, lives in the 4200 block of Maryville Road and said the additional work is really needed. The street is full of potholes, she said. "You'd better have a good car," she said. "Otherwise, it will beat you to death."
The project will not include the intersection of Maryville and Pontoon roads, which is in good condition, city officials said. Additional work may be done when more money is available.
The grant is also paying for $100,000 of improvements on Fehling Road from Nameoki Road to near State Street and on Johnson Road from Nameoki to Edgewood Avenue.
