Back when I had Charter for everything that is what I did, it made more sense to pay a flat 80 bucks then $5/month forever. My opinion is get the newest because it's not just dealing with your older computer, but it's also dealing with the information coming from Charter. (Found out DOCSIS 3.0 features channel bonding where if one channel is having problems it can pass to the other channel to complete the connection. If you are dealing with the higher speeds that Charter offers D3 vs. D2 is the only way to get it.)

When I did buy mine I went with the Motorola Surfboard, I believe it was SB6120, it is available with DOCSIS 3, there is also an SB6121 available, but I don't know the what the differences are.

In searching the message boards at dslreports.com I'm seeing some intermittent reports of the firmware being downgraded and killing download speeds so I don't know if I'd go that route.

Looking up all of this makes me miss my Charter internet, not that I've had issues with AT&T, but I do miss the speeds available, but not the headaches. Good luck with whatever you do decide.
