I think the failed sales tax issue is being confused with education in general. The sales tax was to generate funds to fix broken buildings. Given the age of the buildings I'm sure they have problems. The brochure I got depicted need for tuck-point work, parking lot improvements etc....
Additionally, we the people own those school buildings. Don't we want them to be nice for our children and their children? This tax could not be used for salary increases. That was part of the law from what I read.
I can't ever agree with Lib. I'd have to drive a nail through my brain to do so. Throwing money at education won't fix what ails it. What is hurting education is the loss of connectivity between parents, teachers and students. Parents, in general, don't seem to care like they did when my kids were in school. Kids aren't made to peform like they did back then and mom and dad didn't make every excuse for their kids behavior or failure to learn. Conversely, you didn't hear about "sex scandals" in schools. There's no team effort in too many cases.
Negotiations are what they are. If the board takes a tough stance and the teachers strike, they create a community uproar as there was in 2001. Middle road will never be obtained until such time as people stand in unity and demand better. By the vote yesterday, it appears that most people are happy or complacent.
