Firefighters rescue building; turn it into new barbecue restaurant.
A Granite City firefighters union will increase its contributions to the community with a new barbecue restaurant.
Firefighters Local 253 has partnered with Main Street BBQ out of Imperial, Mo., to open the new eatery in Granite City. To be located at the former Starbucks in Nameoki Commons shopping center, Firehouse BBQ will be operated by the union and return some of the proceeds back to the city.
Union president Jeff Joyce said the union has made many donations to the community throughout the years, including $5,000 to the city's annual Fourth of July Patriots in the Park celebration. The union includes 57 active firefighters and about 30 retirees.
Main Street BBQ is providing the menu and barbecue sauce while other local unions have banded together to renovate the building that will house the new restaurant. Joyce said members from local carpenters, electricians and plumbers unions are helping out. He said Firehouse BBQ is expected to open by March 7.
