Wife of former county treasurer arrested on shoplifting charge

GRANITE CITY -- Police on Wednesday arrested the wife of former Madison County Treasurer Fred Bathon on a misdemeanor charge of shoplifting at Kmart.
Terri S. Bathon, 55, of Timber Bluff Court in Glen Carbon was arrested about 3:30 p.m. on suspicion of stealing two shirts, a pair of shorts and a music CD at the Kmart on Nameoki Road.
She hung up when a reporter called her home Thursday afternoon and identified himself.
A misdemeanor charge of retail theft was filed against her because the combined value of the items allegedly stolen is under $150. The offense carries a maximum sentence of up to a year in jail and a fine of $2,500.
Granite City Police Capt. Ken Rozell said Terri Bathon was booked and released.
Terri Bathon is a licensed nurse, according to state records.
Fred Bathon served as Madison County treasurer for 11 years, until his retirement in December 2009. He served as county auditor for 10 years before becoming treasurer. He was chief deputy auditor for seven years before that, and also served a stint as treasurer for the city of Madison.
Fred Bathon's salary was about $94,000 at the time he retired. The Bathons' home is valued for tax purposes at about $412,000. Fred Bathon, 55, became eligible for his government pension in December, though his pension amount could not be determined Thursday.
The county's annual sales of property tax debts conducted under Bathon are the subjects of state and federal investigations.
The investigations follow Belleville News-Democrat reports that the tax debts were frequently sold to contributors to Bathon's political fund. The buyers routinely were allowed to charge property owners the maximum penalty rate allowed under state law.

She is a Nurse living in a 400,000.00 house and she is stealing from K-Mart? It sounds like she has some sort of mental issues. I don't care who's wife she is. Give me a break. Hope she reports her arrest to IDPR STAT.

Of course there are no details.....but have you heard that Kurt Prenzler County Treasurer wants to hire hundreds of thousands of dollars for consultants because he doesnt know how to be a Treasurer?

Did you all hear about how on the way out the door some bonds were bought for 5 million dollars more than they were worth? The Madco Dems can't hide behind this one because figures do not lie
