Why do they give passing grades to these kids? Because they do enough to pass the class. Damn near any high school in this country is geared towards the fact that if you remotely try you will at least 'pass' the class. However, my experience (particularly in Senior Comp) was that half of the kids did not write their research paper and probably a larger portion did not write their short essays and papers. Instead, they chose to pay friends to write them, plagiarized them, or bought them online. My graduating year two girls got caught doing this and hand to take the class in summer school. My point being, if kids are not willing to do the work it does not matter what the teacher is doing in the class. A good chunk of these kids pass classes such as english by simply cheating. In the classroom a teacher can and should be able to control this. Outside of class, however, it is up to the parents to instill their kids with the idea that cheating is wrong even if you do not get caught. I will say again that the four English teachers I had while I was at GCHS were awesome, particularly who I had my freshman and sophomore years.
