I don't think loyalty is shown in willingness to spend money. I think the fans sent a message that their loyalty won't be exploited.

It was loyalty that the marketing department was trying to exploit. "Oh these nice naive midwesterners will support us no matter what."

The Midwesterners then showed they won't be played for fools. (Until Election day.)
