I believe he did kill it, and you are right, it worked to an extent. It also gave Dems a valid argument that Trump wasn't as concerned about the border as he was having something he could blame Harris for and that he and he alone could take credit for if he won.

I think whoever wins will address and improve border security, not in the same way, but it will improve greatly, but both sides better get ready to compromise and come up with another bipartisan plan.

There are many people in this country who want zero immigration and have been convinced that everyone immigrating are criminals, come from insane asylums, they are trash, etc etc. Just not true, despite Trump's rhetoric.
