I use the delta cold/hot as a valid indicator of the health of the oil system. An engine with a little excessive bleed won't make good pressure at idle but will come right up with rpm.
The only real risk of damage in a case like this is "lugging" the engine at low rpm when there isn't enough pressure to hold the oil wedge around the journal, and it gets metal-on metal...
Good idea also to get the water temp down a bit.
Good luck, sounds like a plan.

: I have a partial course charted.
:
: I will replace the filter, sooner
: rather than later and I will take a
: peek inside as you suggested here and
: in your other post.
: I will order and replace the relief
: valve and spring. I need to order some
: other parts anyway.
: I have installed the oil cooler. I am
: considering buying a non-thermostatic
: sandwich plate for it so the cooler is
: always working.
: I am going to install a 160 degree
: thermostat.
:
: Other things involving opening the
: engine back up (for any reason) will
: come much later. Unfortunately my
: available time to sort this out is
: getting scarce.
:
: Thanks for the suggestions. I will let
: you know what I find.

: With cold oil I would expect it to be
: bumping the relief valve @ 2500-3000
: rpm, and drop as the oil gets to temp.
: You could conceivably be losing some
: due to a valve bypass or weak spring. I
: would open up the filter element and
: inspect it for trash, and also check
: the relief valve & spring, make
: sure there isn't a little bit of trash
: in there, maybe even shim it a bit, as
: a test, and see if that makes a change.
: Also these springs do wear.
: There are several pumps for the Spit,
: later cars use the angled pickup pump,
: it has larger gears than do the earlier
: pumps, and you can make a pump using
: 6-cylinder gears and a spacer for the
: body, but the stock pump should be
: fine.
:
: Re distributor, I think you did exactly
: what I often do... over-oil the
: distributor under the breaker plate...
