You shouldn't have to change needle spec with the S2 if all else is OK.
Ignition timing will vary between engine specs and different distributors ie mechanical and vacuum advance/retard units but to get you in the ballpark, w/o any vacuum controls, generally the engine will want 8-10ish BTDC @ idle and 32-34 @ 3k rpm.

: My last thread discussed the oil leak I
: created by using the wrong galley plug.
: Final reassembly following that repair
: was not possible until today as I was
: waiting for a new gearbox mount.
:
: My oil leak tests were carried out
: first by removing the dizzy and
: operating the oil pump with a drill and
: mandrel. I static timed the engine
: when I put the dizzy back in and I
: thought all was well but the engine is
: not really happy at the moment (grey
: sooty exhaust smoke and stumbling when
: reving the engine with the car parked
: [and there is oil in the dashpots]).
: My next effort will have to be a
: complete tune up. I am also unhappy
: that the brand new water pump installed
: during the engine rebuild last year has
: a shaft leak. Yet more parts to order.
:
: This engine has the S2 cam and stock
: (whatever number they are) Stromberg
: needles. I will static time the engine
: to 8 BTDC and set the jets 2 turns down
: from flush for starting.
:
: Finally my questions....
: Do any of you have suggestions on the
: dynamic timing for the S2 cam? I
: suppose I could bring the revs to 4k
: RPM and set the max advance to 32 BTDC
: but I am hoping someone here has other
: suggestions first.
: If you have tried the S2 cam (or its
: closest Good Parts equivalent cam), did
: you continue to use stock needles or
: did you change to something else?
:
: I'm sure I'll get this sorted out.
: However, I welcome your advice and
: comments on how to make the end result
: of this "better".
:
: Thanks,
: Doug L.
