HAD to make sure everything was right while it's on the engine stand. I DO NOT want to find out something's amiss "after" I put the drive train in the chassis; and God forbid, after the tub's in place.
Thanks Carter. Your reply confirmed what I thought I remembered about the cam's design.

: I don't have a loose cam in front of me
: to examine where the flat occurs WRT
: TDC.
: Also, there's no guarantee that the
: flat in the rearmost cam journal is
: always machined in the same position.
: But, I wouldn't sweat it.
: There are no journal bearings in the
: head, thus no soft meatl shells to be
: damaged at stratup.
: Instead, everything there already makes
: sliding contact.
: Just before startup, I would use a
: squirt can to generously bathe the
: whole works in oil. For each rocker
: arm, lube at the pushrod, pivot on the
: shaft, and at the valve tip.

: I'm trying to manual pump up the oil
: pressure, because it will be many
: months before the engine is actually
: fired up. The process went well (of
: course oil leaked from the filter), but
: I can not get oil to appear in the head
: at all. Even if I remove the screw at
: the back.
:
: I know that the oil goes around the
: rear cam bearing on its way to the
: head. Is there a position I can set
: the cam to that would open up an oil
: path to the head?
