OK turns out to be the charging port, thought maybe the cable. I saw the charge (Lightning bolt) go away again. I wiggled the cable, On/Off, thought oops bad cable, but it goes directly into the OEM charger that came with it, can't change that cable. So saw I have two other mini USB inputs, moved the cable, works well. Put it back to the original, working it in and out a few times. Now OK. Maybe a contact got tarnished.
