I have wondered the same thing, Damian. At the most basic level they did have their love of horses and horse racing in common and they became a successful team. He must have wooed her mightily. He might have promised her that theirs would be a more "modern" marriage, he was spectacularly wealthy and together they were in high standing in the UK. Perhaps, however disagreeable he seemed, she felt she could "change" him. Especially for him, I rather think was the fact that she was a princess by birth from the very prestigious Hashemite dynasty, daughter of a king, sister of a king...but apparently something that money cannot buy.... if you revert to your old ways.
"Abduction, forced return, torture and a campaign of intimidation. On Thursday the damning allegations made against the billionaire ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, by his former wife, Princess Haya Bint Al-Hussain, became established fact, published in a series of judgements by Britain's High Court."
I still wonder how an educated and independent-minded woman like Princess Haya could have got involved with this deeply unpleasant man in the first place!
