It seems the government is considering options. One would be to return junior branches back into the imperial family (but it seems the lack of sons is not just an issue in the main branch) and the other of allowing princesses to keep their title and position after marriage. It would still not allow women to succeed but they could remain active for the monarchy.
We might see both versions introduced in a couple of years. It might even be what Princess Mako is counting on and why she is not planning her wedding just yet.
It is funny, isn't it?! But a lot that happened in 1948 can be antiquated now. Not only in royal families around the world but everywhere in society. It seems short sighted to educate and allow princesses who are obviously an asset to the family to participate in promoting Japan and then not use their experience and skills when they marry commoners when royal princes are not available. Within a generation or two I wonder if changes will simply have to be made for the royal family to survive.
