I don't think the issue is so much with Malaysian royalty marrying outside of the Malay race or even non-Muslims (provided they convert) but *who* they marry.
The current Sultan of Selangor married a white American woman called Lisa Davi back in the 80s and they were married for almost a decade and their son Amir Shah is now heir to the throne.
The Sultan's third and current wife is an air hostess turned a Malaysian TV presenter and had been divorced from a pilot and had children from that marriage.
Both the Sultan of Selangor's daughters from his first marriage are married to white European businessmen, French and British respectively and they appear to have quasi formal roles in Selangor supporting their wives.
The only daughter of the Sultan or Johor married a Dutch semi professional footballer and he appears at lots of official events with her.
There is virtually nothing on the internet about Sofie Louise Johansson's background it seems, perhaps she has led a boring life up to now or perhaps given the fall out from her brother-in-law's marriage steps have been taken to remove anything controversial.
However I think it would be wrong to criticise Malaysian royal houses or indeed the Malaysian people for having real concerns about Muhammad V of Kelantan and his bride Oksana Voevodina.
I think any Western royal family would struggle to justify someone who has worked as a glamour model, appeared to have sex with a man in a jacuzzi on a reality TV show like the Russian version of Big Brother and even faced allegations that she worked in the past as an escort to wealthy men is an appropriate candidate to be join a Royal house, let alone become Queen of Malaysia, which is fundamentally a very conservative Muslim country.
