I wonder if it is about gender equality, or if it is just that the Sultan wants his daughter rather than one of his brothers to succeed him. Just as King Fernando VII of Spain changed the succession ruled so that his daughter Isabella could succeed him instead of his brother Carlos.

Agreed. It is a remarkable sign of the progress of the idea of gender equality, which was long seen by many as exclusively "western."

A very interesting article indeed. I knew nothing about the Kingdom of Yogyakarta before reading it. But it seems that there will be difficult times when the current Sultan dies.
