There is a critical shortage of healthcare providers and bashing fellow healthcare professionals does not help meet public healthcare needs, neither does it help each respective profession gain public trust. I am a family nurse practitioner with ICU ER prehospital and OR first assistanting experience , with all the certifications listed in the previous arguments of the message board. ACLS, PALS, TNCC, ATLS, ...........! # I help with conscious and deep anesthesia and performed many procedures, as well as 22 years of prehospital Emergency medical experience. My point is that when I first learned about anesthesia assistants coming to our hospital, I was a bit fearful because I did not know what their educational tract involved. I "researched" the information on Emory University and found their program very impressive. It offers nonnursing professionals such as physician assitants and prehospital critical care providers with an opportunity to matriculate into anesthesia practice in the PA- MD model or other tract. I compared the AA program tract to the CRNA tract and found them completely comparable in preparation. Also, I have never heard of an anesthesia assistant being sued and would think it would be on the news if this had occurred. My dear CRNA defender colleague it is good that you are proud of your profession as you should be. It's also true you learned alot of skills an an RN before you become a CRNA, but don't shortchange your prehospital critical care providers and PA-C's with emergent and critical care abilities in the quality of the care they can provide in the anesthesia setting. As far as supervisory arrangements, it's between the Anesthesia Assistant and the Anesthesiologist how this is arranged and really not for you to criticize. Your posts hint much arrogance and little fact to substantiate your concerns about Anesthesia Assistant professionals. I have felt the same criticism in the past when trying to advance my professional career and it is only counterproductive and self-serving. Welcome Anesthesia Assistants to our hospital.
