Healthcare experience is a tremendous asset when applying. Completing a quick emt-b course at a community college AND gaining employment is IMO the best improvement you could make to your application. This will give you the required “license” to get a job as an ED tech or a job on a truck.
Don’t dismiss the transporter job either. It is rather difficult to get a job in a hospital if you have no prior healthcare experience and no personal connections, and transporter is a great way to get your foot in the door. It’s also a fantastic way to become comfortable talking to patients and great practice at establishing a personal rapport. You’ll also have the opportunity to make some great contacts in the healthcare industry.
I know several people who took a transporter job, paid their dues, and transferred into the ED after 6 months. No job is beneath you, even if you have a biology degree. Especially in this economy. You have to start at the bottom. Trust me, when you work a job at the bottom of the healthcare totem-pole for long enough, you will get an unmatched level of motivation, focus, and drive to succeed in AA school, and most importantly, you will acquire a new-found sense of appreciation and humility when you finally do get the dream job you’re working towards.
