Re: life as an AA student
A research project is only useful if you published?? I beg to differ on that point, but agree with your others. A main point of my apps was research experience and I got into every AA program. I did not even come close to publishing even though I was involved in research in my undergraduate program, and when pursuing a PhD (which I later changed my mind). You need to publish if you are on the road to becoming a PhD scientist, especially if you are gearing towards academia. Most people do not publish until they are 3 years deep into a PhD program, but some do get lucky along the way, especially if you go to a top 25 or better research university. Not every research project is publishable, for example, if you are working on a project where the technology is in progress of being patented, or you are working on a research project for a company (which were both the cases in my experiences). Several of my references were from my research advisers, but don't worry about publishing, that is overkill.
