Jazzy, I didn't think I needed a "PC in my pocket" either, but the smartphone I got was so inexpensive on eBay ($21 for an $80 phone), I couldn't see the point of paying almost as much for a non-smartphone. Plus, like Lori, I get triple TracFone minutes, texts, and data with it. I don't think you get that with the non-smartphones.
And, now that I have it, I am finding more and more uses for the smartphone capabilities. For instance, if I want to look up something without dragging out my Chromebook, I can do it easily on the phone, using my home WiFi. I can get alerts that an eBay auction I am participating in is about to end. I am even supposed to be able to sell things on eBay from my phone, but haven't tried that yet. As you may have heard, there is a problem with doing that on the Chromebook.
I can use a Roku app on my phone that allows me to use the phone as an extra Roku remote (that actually works better than the original remote and has way more capabilities, including casting to my TV via the Roku box and smartphone app). I can use my TVGuide app to look up TV listings for any time of day without dragging out the Chromebook. I can check email without dragging out the Chromebook. And I have only begun to explore the possibilities...
I don't have a tablet like you, so it kind of serves the same kind of purpose, with the added benefit that it is small enough to take with me when I go out.
