Whatever credit is warranted goes to Eric Goggins and Tyler Devine. Eric started producing ship models in a variety of scales last year and made contact with 1250 collectors in Northern California. Unfortunately Eric was unable to overcome the financial strains of starting a new business and had to quit. Fortunately Tyler has taken over from Eric, but faces the same challenges. Some 1250 collectors have collaborated to assist Tyler, but he still has many obstacles to overcome and nothing is assured. One of our goals is to help Tyler determine what models will be most in demand. It does him no good to invest time and money in producing models that don’t sell in sufficient numbers to return the cost of production or provide a profit. Previous Message
Congratulations, John, on coming up with the idea that those of you in the USA will get better value for money if you buy models that are made in the USA. You may also get a tolerable price for customers if you can get a licence to build foreign designs within the USA. Previous Message
I'll be glad to answer any inquiries about our "crowdfunding" of specific models by private email. I want to make it clear I'm not soliciting any monetary contributions for this on the Board, only gauging the level of interest in choosing the models to be considered for future production. Do you want those posted here on the board or emailed to you? Previous Message
Over the last year or so a number of interested 1250 scale collectors spearheaded by the Northern California collectors' group have been working to support the efforts, first, of Eric Goggins (Yestr Toys) and more recently, of Eric's successor Tyler Devine (Ten Twenty Models) to provide our community with high quality 3D printed models of ships not previously done by any of the traditional cast metal producers.
These efforts have led to the production of some unique models now available at reasonable prices for the first time through Tyler's website ( https://www.tentwenty3d.com/ ), including USS MIDWAY, F.D. ROOSEVELT and CORAL SEA in their final configurations, USS MONITOR (LSV 5), USS THETIS BAY (LPH 6), MV CAPE WRATH and most of the angle deck ESSEX class CVs of the 1960's.
Most of these have been special requests by individuals or groups of collectors willing to fund the initial development costs that average around $400 to $500 per model. In return, each contributor receives an unfinished 3D print of the model, which the contributor may finish and paint as he chooses. Finishing usually requires cutting the model and its components from their sprue matrix, cleaning and light sanding, some minor assembly, priming and painting. The cost to the contributor varies according to the number of contributors interested in acquiring a particular model. If 5 contributors commit to funding a model that requires $400 in initial production costs, the cost to each contributor is $80 for their final print. 10 contributors would pay $40 each, and so on. Once the model is produced, it would be available to all for sale on Tyler's website at a set price.
The purpose of this survey is to determine what specific models our community would like to see produced.
Feel free to reply to this post with a list of any particular ship (noting type, nationality and date) you would like to see produced. Preferably, these will be of ships not already done by anyone else, but even ships already produced by others will be considered if there is enough demand. If someone else has listed any of your favorite ships, list them again, as it will help gauge the level of interest. Suggestions for ship components and parts (guns, boats, cranes, etc) for customizing and model conversions are also welcome.
Though no commitment to fund a specific model is necessary for this survey, anyone interested may contact me by email (neslo1250@gmail.com) to follow up.
