The new Barker also has full width hatches with vertical sides and strengthened hatch covers, all allowing for carriage of general as well as bulk cargoes (e.g. windmill parts and containers). Since unlike conventional lakers the hold does not have sloped sides to allow bulk cargo to gravity fall on to the unloading conveyor, the Barker includes a pair of front end loaders in two garages (one fore, one aft) at the bottom of the holds, used to move residual dry bulk cargo to grates over the conveyor. The ship is strengthened by four large transverse beams at main deck level allowing for an uninterrupted hold area.
