Prior to this format only the worst 5 teams were in the draft. There was a proposal to eliminate the lottery which met opposition so the thought process was by putting all team in the lottery maybe teams on the bubble would go for it and if they fell short they would still have a chance at a top 3 pick. I don't think it worked, we're still pretty much an all in or all out league.
An argument against the current system is that the odds aren't weighted properly, the worst team doesn't have a good enough chance of getting the first pick and the best team has too good of a chance. The reason for this was the physical limitations of doing this in person with some sort of machine where we physically drew balls with teams logos on them.
We used to draw the lotto balls at the draft so you knew your picking order for one day before you made a selection. It was making it hard to trade those picks so we changed it to draw at the winter free agency and it was still done physically.
Now that we are doing everything via zoom I think we could eliminate the physical limitations and do some sort of random number generator or even draw a formula in excel to return infinite results and we could weight the lottery any way we saw fit.
I don't want to get into a lengthy conversation yet about all the different ways we could do the lottery. I simply want to know at the moment if GMs want to explore it.
I would love a response from everyone with one of 3 responses, 1. Eliminate the lottery for both leagues and use reverse winning percentage, 2. Institute the lottery in both leagues but modify the current procedures, 3. keep the lottery system the NL currently uses and just institute it in the AL also.
If you want to throw in 2 cents about why you feel this way feel free but again I ask that we not start throwing out lengthy threads about how to do the lottery. If enough want to explore it I will take input, make a proposal and start a new thread.
