Many people prefer the Blue Willow made in Japan. The color is usually a nice deep cobalt, but not too dark. Also, with no inner border, the center pattern appears larger. All Japanese willow was made in the 20th century. Generally speaking, if it is marked JAPAN, it could be pre-World War II. Pieces marked Made in Japan can be a little later. But, most pieces will mix and match well with the same basic color. The newer pieces (that had paper labels that came off) tend to be lighter in color, and can be porcelain -- shinier and even translucent. You can usually find good Japanese willow in Antique shops and malls. Happy Hunting!
