Catholic Cardinal waives Friday Lenten rules for St. P's DayArchived Message

One of the annoying things about the Catholic Church is the never-ending set of rules, many of which seem arbitrary. There are certain expectations about Fridays during Lent. Well, this time St. Patrick's Day is on a Lenten Friday, so the good Cardinal of the DC archdiocese (DC + part of Maryland) said, don't worry, you can skip the rules today. Of course, a purist might argue that a day of partying would be the best time for fasting or other restraint in honor of the season, rather than the other way around. I don't care, because I ignore the rules and am on the way out anyway.
