A g-great-uncle of mine was homeless and lived in and out of workhouses. On a number of occasions, he set fire to hayricks so he would be jailed for the winter months, he also broke into a shop and stole clothes. I have many newspaper reports of his crimes and court entries for his charges and sentencing.

He tramped about Yorkshire and Lincolnshire from the mid-1890s until his final incarceration in Lincoln Gaol.
It was from here he enlisted in 1915 and atoned for his wastrel life by paying the ultimate penalty, his life - his body was never found - A sad ending to a very sad life
