    On the higher grades, the barrels water table and the inside of the locks were "jeweled". Another word for it is engine turned. On soft steel you can do it with the old fashioned ink pen that had an eraser on the tip, chuck it in a drill press or hand drill to make the pattern. You can also do it with a dowel mounted in a drill press and put lapping compound on the tip to do the same.
