Bill, that is not what I expected the spring to look like. Looks to be fairly stout. Thanks for posting the picture.
To take out the extractor you might have to take out the screw on the lug. From being in there all these years the back end will develop a burr. Use a punch and gently tap the extractor out and then you can file it. When I take them out, most have dried up oil along with powder residue that really cakes it up.
