I would guess thousands of 20 and 16 gauge with 2 1/2" and 2 9/16" chambers have through the years been fired with 2 3/4" shells. Mostly because the shooters did not know they were short chambered. A 2 3/4" shell after firing is close to 2 3/4" in length and what happens is that the ends do not fully open and you build up more pressure at this point. Now if you were shooting a maximum load using 1 oz. or 1 1/8 oz. shot, you are looking at more felt recoil and that is why on quite a few of these guns the crack behind the locks. I'm sure that there were some that used 1 1/4 oz. of shot and you can imagine what that will do after a period of time.
