    lc hammer gun Archived Message

at the southern last spring i bought an E grade hammer gun in the original leather case from the early 1880's. I actually had to buy the gun to get the case. the case i recognized from a picture in the 1884 LC catalogue. its a very unusual and distinctive case. the old case was in excellent condition for being 130+ years old and required only minor stitching repairs to bring it back to life.
I didn't pay a lot of attention to the gun at the time, thinking at best it might be a parts gun.
My gunsmith offered to buy the gun for the hammers, but i decided to see what i could learn about it first. Dr. Jims production records shows there are only 28 of these on record, only 10 with 30 inch bls.
Can this be correct? If so, and he has these stats may it be possible to get a letter?
Closer examination shows that the gun is very restorable so i believe i have a worthwhile project. the ser.# is 11464, but i don't find that in any of the production records.
The hammers are of the tall type so i believe its an early gun.

Can any of you hammer gun guys offer any additional info? anything will be appreciated.
