Top lever spring – what's going on here? Archived Message

I'm fixing up a 20ga field grade that has needed quite a bit of work that I've embarked on myself. I would really appreciate some help here.

I notice the spring pictured in the photo does not fit in the recessed groove as it is supposed to. Also some background: the top lever seemed to be way over to the left when the gun was assembled and I was running through its operation however it was holding fine with no wiggle. Also, in order to align with the trigger asssembly, I have to compress the spring with quite a bit of force. From what I've researched it's a bit excessive and I'm attributing it to the way the spring is fitted.

Now my question: could this have been done for a particular reason or was this poor work. Subsequently, can I remove and trim the spring to fit?
