    Zachary, the logwood chips were the last step that Dr. Gaddy used to darken the barrels.
    L.C. Smith barrels were never darkened and have almost a matte finish to them especially the steel barrels.
    I use Radio Shack's ferric chloride reduced to 15% and had used distilled water. The last few I did, I just used tap water (well water) and they came out fine.
    The dipping in the mixture of ferric chloride and water is only for 5 seconds, take out and rinse in water then card (I use either old denim or green Scotch brite).
