    etching damascus Archived Message

I have a set of Damascus lc smith barrels that I am polishing out to refinish. My main question is there a way to refinish them without having to rust blue and then etch like that done by Oscar Gaddy and others. It seems to me that after the barrels are polished out and degreased they can be etched with Ferric Chloride which brings out the pattern and then be boiled in logwood to the desired look. I have seen Damascus knives etched in FeCl and vinegar that have the black and white finish after only being in this mixture for a few seconds. My worries is that it may be too strong and could damage barrels. My first set to do and unsure. Appreciate any help. God Bless, Zachary
