Doug, here is what has worked for me. Most of the oil in an old stock is in the head stock. I went to the thrift store and found some large glass flower vases large enough to submerge the stock. (cheap too) I soaked the stock in acetone from Lowes several times. I would leave it until the acetone discolored. At first this was just an hour or two (more oil) and then later several hours. It will probably take several cycles. New acetone each cycle. This works so that I am able to successfully glue and repair a cracked stock and then refinish. Be sure and check the stock for cracks and breaks after the process. I think it would b e a rare gun to find no damage. Good luck.
