factory color case hardening Archived Message

I color case hardened one of my lc smiths for the first time last week. Colors turned out very good but the pattern and colors did not turn out to me to look very lc smith like. It's a field grade 16 gauge pre 1913 that I am completely going through in a restoration/upgrade type project. I have color case hardened other guns and parts but this was my first lc smith. Does anyone know how hunter arms performed this process back in the day. I bolted a square piece of steel through the cocking rod holes to the front of the reciever for shielding as it drops. My crucible is similar to Mr. Oscar Gaddys. After doing several guns I've really noticed that shielding really makes a difference in how the color patterns form. Just wanting some advice on how to get the most authentic look from others who may be able to get these results. Thanks in advance and thanks for the help I've received on previous posts. God bless, Zachary
