Picked up a project gun at the Southern Side by SideArchived Message

I managed to pickup a half done project gun at Sanford. It's a 1905 00, with 32" barrels. The stock on it is possibly the plainest piece of wood I have ever seen on a gun, and looks like someone shaped it with a surform tool.
It was most likely a pattern stock for later duplication, since it has modern dimensions and a monte carlo cheek piece. Receiver has been recased recently and looks like a good job.
Now for the parts to work on; The left firing pin is way too long, prohibits the gun from opening if the pin is all the way out. I can grind the pin down to the correct length, but I understand they need to be heat treated afterward?
Right side is cocking the hammer, but I'm getting light strikes about half the time. The local LC guru suspects the wood to metal fit is off and the hammer is dragging in the stock. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
The good of it was it does break targets when everything works.
