I need some advice/guidance Archived Message

I grew up in NW Pennsylvania and hunted the fields with my father, who always hunted small game with his 16 gauge double-barrel L. C. Smith. He passed away decades ago, and my mother passed away just two years ago.
His gun (now mine) is beyond weathered, in that the metal parts have been overtaken by surface rust. I have investigated having the gun completely restored, knowing that it would require an investment well beyond the intrinsic value of the gun.
I would like to maintain the patina of use, but the rust is unacceptable. I am trying to sort out how to preserve the integrity of the gun, clean it up appropriately.
My purpose is not to sell the gun...I want to keep it, but to optimize its condition.
I am hoping to be able to contact someone who knows and loves the brand to give me some guidance...basically, a measure twice and cut once approach to cleaning up this precious firearm
    Thanks!
