I think the best remedy to the problem you mentioned is to find a good gunsmith that ids familiar with vintage SXS guns and have him replace it with a period correct pad. If your lucky enough to have a good gunsmith in your area he will probably measure you & your gun and fit the pad accordingly. Most of the time they charge around $75.00 for the new pad, fitting & instillation. If your current pad is rock hard I don't know if trying to bring it back to life would be worth the while.
