William, I have rust blued barrels and from what I have read from the late Dr. Gaddy is that he used either motor oil or boiled linseed oil. He lightly heated the barrels warm to the touch and used either the motor oil or linseed oil. I have tried both and like the linseed oil. It takes a few days for it to harden but seems like a durable protective coating.
I believe the original guns shipped from Hunter Arms Co. only had a protective coating of oil on them.
