    Tim,
    This is a subject that has been kicked around forever. i.e. blued frames from the factory, and nearly everyone (except those who own a blued frame gun) will dispute their existence. David's response is correct, but note that his information refers to REPAIR PRICE LISTS--not original prices. I've seen several of these guns, but never a letter from the records stating that they left the factory with blued frames.
    But--I digress from your question. Is the wear on the gun consistent? Is it a Marlin-era gun or a Fulton one? Is there someone nearby familiar with Smiths to do a hands-on examination? Is a factory letter available?
    You have a quandre7751389y. From a purely economic point of view, you could have the gun recased and still retain a margin of value at current market values, but if the gun was factory blued you would destroy the originality.
    I'm glad that I don't have to make that decision !
