    3" 20 gauge Archived Message

I purchased today an L.C. Smith Field Grade, 20 gauge ejector, 30" barrels, 3" chambers, choked full and full. The serial number FWE 47382 puts it made in 1922. It has what could be an original Josten pad, with a patent date of 1919, I think. It is kind of hard to read, it may be 1915. The barrels are marked with the "3 Inch Chamber" oval on the right barrel flat.
The guy I bought it from thinks it could have come from the Los Banos, CA area. Isn't that the area that had the duck clubs in the 20's that required their members to shoot a 20? I have heard of Parkers and Foxes chambered specifically for these clubs, but not a Smith.
I find no record in either Brophy's or Houchin's books about the 20 ga. being chambered in 3". Would a Cody letter likely contain any information about the chambering or whether or not a pad was ordered with the gun? ? Also, I would like your thoughts about how uncommon this variation is.
    Thanks,
    Gordon
