Spreader loads utilize a partition in the shot column that spreads the shot charge out, effectively opening the chokes on the typically tight choked old doubles. This shortening the effective range - for me around to 25 - 30 yds.
One caution, I have had some dog owners to ask that spreaders not be used, as they have had their dogs peppered with them. Not all the spreaders fault ...
