Destry: We arrived in England on New Years Eve and began to celebrate in fine fashion. We shot a rough day on Tuesday ie. walking up like we hunt in the States at Englefield a 17,000 acre estate about 50 miles west of London on Wednesday. Great fun with pheasant, woodcock, partridge and wood pigeon in the bag and then shooting duck over a pond at sunset into the pitch dark. We then drove to Scotland on Wednesday and shot two days of driven pheasant on Thursday and Friday. We were shooting at Drumlanrig Castle on the Queensberry Estate which is in southwest Scotland about 25 miles from Lockerbie, the site of the Pan Am plane bombing. The driven shooting was just what you read about. A line of 8 guns with beaters driving the pheasant and picker uppers with retrievers behind the guns. We shot 155 birds on the first day and 183 on the second day. High, fast pheasant are hard to hit especially when using 1 oz #5 shot. 30 to 35 yards was the typical shot with at least 25% of the birds 40 yds and longer. If you ever have the opportunity to go, by all means do it. It is a spectacle in the finest tradition and darn difficult shooting!
