Ken, I forgot to state this in my previous post. If you still can't get the forend off, bring it back to the dealer and tell him to take it off, this way if anything is wrong, he should take it back or have it fixed. As far as taking it off once a year to clean it, I hope not, you should be able to take it off every time you shoot it and clean it right.
