Several years ago I had the pleasure to talk to a gentleman that had experience with the process of doing the barrel engraving He advised me that it was a roll engraving process. A yoke held a wheel in a press similar to a present day milling machine the barrels were jigged on a movable tableand pressure was added till contact between the wheel and barrels were made and the table was moved back and forth as the press was tightened till the desired depth was made. This gentleman also told me that the wheel had a dove tail cut out where the model / grade name was so the same wheel was used for the majority of lower grades and the inset was changed for the model. Of course the barrels were hand engraved on the highest grade guns.
